The New York Knicks won 17 games this past season under first year head coach Derek Fisher. Their .207 win percentage earned them another lottery draft pick and they won the fourth pick overall. The Knicks were a mess. There were times when the Knicks had five guys on the floor that were not on the roster to begging the season. NBA D-Leaguers, free agents they picked up to 10 day contracts, and other scrubs they found. It did not help that their superstar Carmelo Anthony only played in 40 games, but the 31 year old was dealing with a knee injury that forced him to miss the remainder of the season.
The Knicks team President Phil Jackson was rejoiced when he joined the franchise he once played for. The man has coached legends in Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, and Kobe Bryant. He has 13 NBA championships between his playing and coaching career. He knows what it takes to win, and the fans in New York were excited. Then Thursday night happened. The Knicks selected 19 year old Kristaps Porzingis from Latvia. Standing at 6’11” 209 pounds, the young kid had some work to do. He has a Dirk Nowitzki style of game with the ability to stretch the floor, and at just 19 years old, he is athletic enough to throw it down with ease.
Carmelo was upset with the Knicks and Phil Jackson over the selection. Why would they select a player so high who will not be able to have an immediate impact right away? By the time Kris in his prime in 4 to 5 years, Carmelo will be 35 and on the decline. Who knows what next season will be like and if he will ever be the same after the knee injury. After reports came out that Anthony was upset with Jackson and company, he had a sudden change of heart. Carmelo went on to say that he liked the selection of the Latvian and that he was a steal.
Melo, Melo, Melo. Don’t lie to us. He should be upset. He signed a five year extension worth $124 million. He could have gone anywhere. He could have gone to Los Angeles and teamed up with Kobe, or stayed in the Eastern Conference and partnered with Derrick Rose. It is unfortunate that this All-Star will go down with no rings on his fingers, at least while wearing a Knicks uniform. Carmelo owes it to the die hard Knicks fans to be honest. He is not happy about the fourth overall pick. He is not happy with the direction that this team is going in. He should have got out when he could have.
